Japanese vs English Pokémon cards: what is the difference?

Japanese Pokémon cards are the original-language print of the game and are usually released before the English sets, often with different pack sizes and set names. They are not the same product as the English version, even when many cards are shared. Japanese cards suit collectors; if you play at English-language events, check what your organiser accepts.

How English sets relate to Japanese sets

English sets are often assembled from one or more Japanese sets. Recent examples, checked on 19 October 2026:

English set English release Japanese set(s) it draws on
Surging Sparks 8 Nov 2024 SV8 Super Electric Breaker (18 Oct 2024) and SV7a Paradise Dragona (13 Sep 2024)
Ascended Heroes 30 Jan 2026 MEGA Dream ex, M2a (28 Nov 2025) and Start Deck 100 Battle Collection
Chaos Rising 22 May 2026 Ninja Spinner, M4
